What to include in a bug report
- Which device and OS version, and whether it was the iPhone or the Mac app.
- What you were doing, in one line — “rating from the list”, “pasting an image into the editor”.
- What you expected, and what happened instead.
- Roughly when it happened, so we can find it in the logs you send.
- A screenshot, if it is a visual problem. It almost always is.
Never send us your idea files to reproduce something. Describe the shape of the content instead — we would rather guess than read your notes.
Frequent questions
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone on iOS 18 or later, and Mac on macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Both apps read and write the same boxes, and a box can sit in iCloud Drive or on a folder you sync yourself if you'd rather not use Magic Sync.
Where are my ideas stored?
In a folder you choose — a Magic Box. Inside it, ideas are plain .md files, recordings are .m4a, attachments keep their own names. Nothing is locked in a proprietary database: the SQLite file beside them is an index the app can rebuild from the files.
Does it work with Obsidian?
Point the app at a vault folder and it adopts the markdown already there. Files the app saves get a small YAML header (id, created date, rating); files you wrote yourself are read, not rewritten. Wikilinks and hashtags are the same syntax you already use.
Does it work offline?
Entirely. Capture, transcription, search, editing and AI analysis all run on the device with no network. Sync is the only feature that needs one, and it is off until you turn it on.
How do I get the Mac build?
Fill in the three-question form on the home page. The download link is on the page you land on afterwards, and in your invite email. The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens normally — no Gatekeeper detour.
How do I update the Mac build during the beta?
Download the new zip and replace the app in /Applications. We email when a build is out. Your boxes and settings are untouched by the swap.
How do I get the iPhone build?
Same form. iPhone builds go through Apple TestFlight, so you'll need the free TestFlight app from the App Store, then the invite link we send you.
Something crashed. What helps?
On iPhone, send it straight from TestFlight — shake the device or use the TestFlight app; crash logs and a screenshot come attached. On Mac, email us what you were doing when it happened and roughly when. Time and last action beat a long description.
How do I delete my data?
Beta signup: email privacy@ideamagicbox.app and the row is gone. Sync account: delete it from Settings in the app, which removes the account and every encrypted object on the server. Local files: they are files — delete the folder.
I lost my sync password.
Use your recovery key — it is the second way into the same data key. If both are gone, the server data cannot be decrypted by anyone, including us; that is what end-to-end encryption means. Your local copy on any device that is still signed in is unaffected.
